Recently, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed that his company xAI’s much-awaited AI chatbot, Grok-1.5, will soon be available to the public. The move comes after Grok-1.5 became open-source, marking XAI’s official entry into the rapidly growing AI chatbot market. Musk hinted at further progress with the development of Grok 2 in a social media post on Friday.

Key Developments Confirmed by Musk

Last week, Elon Musk used his X platform to share a poster which was also blogged on his website, the poster can be read in the image. The next version of the chatbot is scheduled to launch in a few days and will be available to early users as well as Grokma users. This latest version comes with upgrades to reasoning skills and expanded context that can support up to 128,000 tokens.

Musk’s Legal Battle with OpenAI

Earlier this month, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the organization he co-founded in 2015 but later left in 2018 along with its CEO Sam Altman. The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI has failed to meet its commitment to make its ChatGPT model open-source, prioritizing shareholders instead.

Background on xAI and the Competitive Landscape

Musk launched xAI in July of the previous year, aiming to rival OpenAI in the AI domain. The initial version of Grok debuted in November, followed by Musk’s announcement of merging xAI with his social media platform X. Initially available only to X Premium+ subscribers, Grok will soon be accessible to all users following Musk’s decision to open-source the chatbot.

The AI chatbot arena has witnessed intensified competition, especially after the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT model in November 2022. Google joined the fray in March 2023 with its model, Bard, followed by the introduction of Gemini in December, despite facing criticisms over historical inaccuracies and generating controversial images. Musk went as far as to label Google’s AI arm as “racist” in a post on X, amidst the tumultuous rollout of Gemini.
