Global Microsoft Outage Disrupts Indian Airlines: Delays, Manual Check-ins and Government Response

Global Microsoft Outage Disrupts Indian Airlines

On July 19, 2024, Airlines across India faced significant disruptions due to a global computer outage. This led to delays and manual check-ins at airports. Airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air were among those airlines that were affected.

Government Response

Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu assured passengers that efforts are being made to minimize disruptions. He said that the airlines and the airport authorities are working together to keep passengers informed and assist them.

Technical Issue Identified and Resolved

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) network was not affected by the outage. He stated that the issue is related to Microsoft. He added that the issue has been identified and resolved. The CERT-In issued an advisory on the severity of the outage. The outage was caused by a CrowdStrike update.

Airlines Implement Manual Processes

IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air switched to manual check-in processes due to the outage. Passengers were advised to arrive at the airport early to ensure smooth check-ins. Airports like Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport saw several flight cancellations and delays.

Passengers Experience Inconvenience

In Bengaluru, passengers faced delays and overcrowding at the Kempegowda International Airport. Airlines issued handwritten boarding passes. This led to long waits and anxious passengers.

Stock Exchanges Unaffected

Despite the widespread outage, all the major financial institutions, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), reported no impact on their operations.

Ongoing Efforts to Restore Normalcy

Airlines are working diligently to restore normal operations. IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air are coordinating with Microsoft Azure to resolve the technical issues. They will ensure smooth functioning of their services.
